Shri Sai Satcharitra - the life and teachings is a compilation of stories, events and experiences of devotees that occured during the earthly sojourn of Shree Sai Baba. Shree Sai Baba arrived in Shirdi along with a marriage party, as a young lad of twenty, and went to stay till he attained Maha-Samadhi in the year 1918. With his express permission, notes were kept of various accounts by Govind R Dhabolkar (Hemadpant) and after Baba's Maha-Samadhi, these were compiled into a book in Marathi in 1926. Since then, the book has been translated into various Indian languages under the publication of Shree Sai Baba Sansthan Trust.
During his visit to Shirdi, Govind R Dhabolkar(Hemadpant) of Mumbai was inspired to document the life of Shree Sai Baba. With the help of other devotees, he sought Baba's permission. While approving the idea, Shree Sai Baba adorned the title of Hemadpant to Dhabolkar and gave permission to carry on the work. After the sudden departure of Baba, Hemadpant started to compile his notes into the book Sai Satcharitra in Marathi Ovi form. Unfortunately he did not survive to revise his manuscript and some things were left out. Mr.B.V.Deo of Thane helped complete the work and sent to Publishers.
Devotees across the world read Sai Satcharitra regularly. If you are just starting out in Saiism or are curious, here are the schedules followed: 1)Saptah Parayan: The goal of this schedule is to complete reading the entire book in seven days. The total chapters in the book is divided by seven and that many chapters (usually 7 or 8) are read each day. Upon completion of one reading, it may be followed up with more such cyles. This is a suggested reading before making a wish or as an offering of thanks to Baba for having fulfilled the wish. 2)Akahnda Parayan: The goal of this schedule is to complete reading the book in one go except for breaks needed to answer Nature calls or have tiffin. This is suggested for those seeking urgent relief in their situation or if the situation is dire. Upon completion of one reading, it may be followed up with more such cyles. 3)Dainik Parayan: The goal of this schedule is to read short passages each day and contemplate on the topic. At times, Devotees end up reading the same passage multiple times to grasp the full meaning. The beauty of Sai Satcharitra is that the same story reveals a different meaning based on the experiences and stage of one's life. This schedule is suggested for those who seek spiritual progress in this life and never ends. It is part of the devotee's daily life. 4)Random Parayan: As the name suggests, devotees randomly open the book and start reading from the story their eyes rest on. This is suggested for those who wish to stay connected with Sai Baba but can't have the discipline for Dainik parayan at the stage of life they are at. Based on your situation you can adapt any of the schedule as convenient.
If you already follow Shodasa Opachara or other method, then please continue. For those interested, it is recommended, at a minimum, that before starting to read Sai Satcharitra, finish ablutions, compose your mind by doing nama japa (holy chanting) for a bit. Sit comfortably, preferably facing East in your pooja room or in a clean place. Light a diya or oil lamp, offer incense or camphor (if safe), some dry fruits or sugar and water or milk to Baba with a prayer to help the reader realise their purpose or goal prior to reading. Once the reading is complete, offer arathi of one's choice to Baba. Upon conclusion of reading the book, offering Annadan or calling home guests for lunch or dinner is an establised practice.
Shri Sai Satcharita serves as a primary source of material for Sai devotees, as it originated during Baba's time. The author was expressly permitted by Baba Himself. The hagiographic account helps the readers to connect with Baba and relive the incidents and events mentioned. The various stories and sayings of Baba provide solace, comfort and reassurance to the devotee of today; that Baba is very vigorously active in his subtle form helping those who seek his shelter.
The reward of study of Sai Satcharitra is detailed in the eilopgue of the book.
The book is a difficult read for beginners, but it gets easier upon repetition. Based on the schedule and goal of the reader, it may take about half an hour for a chapter to a few hours if reading multile chapters. The reader is advised to make time for this purpose and not rush through. Setting aside all worldly distractions and reading with concentration will be most fruitful to the reader.
